Ingredient Info and Substitution Suggestions
SWEET POTATO Sweet potato is full of protein and fiber and is a good source of nutrition for your pup, however, it is high in carbohydrates so always feed treats in moderation! Be sure to peel the sweet potatoes before beginning as it can be more difficult for your dog to digest. Lastly, keep in mind that you dont ever want to feed a dog raw sweet potato.
PUMPKIN Pumpkin is another ingredient high in fiber, Vitamin A, and antioxidants. You will want plain, 100% canned pumpkin with no additional flavors added. Not only is pumpkin known for helping with tummy issues, but the high fiber content helps with digestion.
FLOUR Though we like the additional nutrients that whole wheat flour provides, you may substitute with coconut flour or regular all-purpose flour. Both of which are also safe for dogs, given that they do not have specific allergies to certain flours. Note that swapping out the type of flour you use may change the consistency of the dough.

Homemade Dog Treats
When we adopted our Labrador puppy a year ago, Inever could have imagined what an integral part of our little family she would become. Maddieis the best-behaved, most affectionate pupster we could have asked for and is always up for an adventure, be it a walk to the beach or a run in Golden Gate park. For Maddie, every day is thebest day ever. I watch her unbridled joy for every experience and everyone she meets and it reminds me to have that mindset too.
A little over a month ago, we were faced with the awful possibilitythat our time with our adventure partner might be cut short. Maddie didnt seem quite like herself and refused to eat her dinner, something that has never happened before. Then, in the middle of the night she started having bloody stools that continued through the next day. We were both at our wits end and had no idea what to do to help her feel better. After doing some informalonline research,it seemed that most likely she hadeither eaten something, like a rock, or had a bad infection. We took her to the pet emergency room where she received the same treatment that I have given to many patients an x-ray, IV fluids and antibiotics. Thanks to this care, she slowly started to get better. It was our first experience with Maddie being sick and it was a little shocking how strong the emotions it caused were. It clearly didnt take long for her to make our family of two into a family of three.
To celebrate Maddies health, I made a batch of her favorite homemade dog treats. Maddie goes crazy for these all natural dog biscuits. Even though they smell like human food, I swear she knew they were her even before I popped them in the oven.
