Liver Cake For Dogs
Do you want to know how to make liver cake for dogs? If you havent already made it for your four legged friend, you really need to give it a go, theyll love you even more (if thats at all possible!)
First up, Im not a fan of liver.
But my dog is. And who am I to deny that face of cuteness?!
Liver cake makes the perfect dog treat and is especially useful for training dogs.
This particular recipe makes a large amount, what I like to do is make this quanity and then freeze some to defrost for later use.
You only need to give them a tiny little bit when you are training, so make sure you cutit up into really small chunks. Liver cake is richand a little goes a long way.
If you want to make less, then you will need to scale it down accordingly.
How To Make Liver Cake For Dogs
Youll need a blender or food processor to make this liver cake recipe. I used my Ninja blender, but you can use any blender.
Place the liver, egg and garlic (removed I have too many questions about garlic and dogs, please ask your vet for advice) in the blender and blast it until smooth. If you dont like liver, you probably wont enjoy this part!
Mix it into the flour. I used spelt flour, but you can also use wholemeal flour.
Transfer it to a baking tray. You can lightly grease it, or use some baking paper, to stop it from sticking.
Cook it for about 30 minutes and then leave it to cool before slicing it up into bite sized treats.
Side note: if your dog is about during this time they will go pretty crazy trying to get a sneaky taste in!
Storing Liver Cake
Once the liver cake has cooled down, chop it up into smaller treat sizes and portion them out for when you need to use them.

Yeuch, liver, and cake? Why on earth would anyone want a liver cake recipe? Well if you arent a fan of liver or the smell ofliver cooking, this may be the last thing you want to cook. However, dont be too quick tostop reading here.
These are high value reward treats and I promise you, they can make a huge difference when training your dog.
You know, those times when your dog decides to have a stubborn streak. Yep, even I occasionally get that blank look or teenager behaviour of I cant hear you from Millie! Personally, Ive foundthat when Millie starts to get bored or distracted during agility classes, then these treats always save the day. I mix in a few liver cake chunks with her normal shop bought treats and shes suddenly more attentive and focused for longer!. Whoop!

As someone who is always pushed for time, I can guarantee the recipe is super easy to make and can be made gluten-free too. My top tip would be to get that smelly cooking over all at once and batch cook several portions as it can be frozen. You can popbatches of it into thefreezer and it will last you several weeks at a much lower cost than shop bought treats.
Ok so enough of how good it is, lets get on with making them. Heres myliver cake recipe guaranteed to satisfy those four paws!
Liver Cake Recipe
Preparation Time: 15 minutes;Cooks In: 90 minutes
Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients:
450g (1lb) ofraw liver (Ive used lamb)
450g (1lb) of self-raisingflour (or gluten-free flour for dogs with allergies)
3 eggs
2 cloves ofgarlic (or 1 teaspoon of lazy garlic)
Milk/Water
(n.b before you hit the comments button with the fact that garlic is dangerous to dogs, there is very confusing contradicting info and garlic in small doses is deemed to be safe. If in any doubt, then do just exclude from the recipe).
Method:
#1 Mix eggs and milk/water
In a measuring bowl, crack the eggs and add milk or water to double the volume. Using a fork, mix well to blend.
#2 Mix liver and garlic
Using a blender, liquidise the liver and garlic to a smooth consistency.
#3 Mix the above together
Mix in the egg and milk/water mixture to the blended liver and garlic.
#4 Stir in the flour
In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredient flour.Youll find it will turn into a sticky, dough-like consistency.
#5 Transfer into baking tray(s)
I personally separate into two batches and line my baking trays (can be unlined). You could be creative here and make a bone shaped cake perfect for doggy birthdays.
#6 Bake in the oven
Pop into theoven at 180 degrees, for 45-60mins. Check on the cake at around 35 mins the top should be darkened and should bounce back when pressed lightly.
#7 Cut into treat sized pieces
Remove from oven and cut into small sized bites (if preparing as treats). I find it cuts a little easier whilst still warm. Though be warned your pooch will be watching you carefully at this point.
#8 Keep in fridge or freeze
Keep any fresh batches in the fridge and pop the others into the freezer. Whilst some people suggest letting it defrost, I find it does this quickly and if in small enough bites, there is no need to do so.
These treats will last in the fridge for 2-3 days and in the freezer from around 3 months.

Dried liver dog treats
The definitive training teat
This dog treat cant be beat. This is what I use for treats when Im walking all my dogs and there is a huge difference to how the pups respond to thesehomemade treats for dogs compared processed shop-bought stuff and if you do this you will see why theyre the best dog training treats you can get! Its very cheap to buy liver from your local supermarket or butcher (much cheaper than branded treats and a whole lot better for your dog). Ive never known treats to go down so well with dogs. I cannot emphasize enough how much your dog will love these, dogs that wouldnt respond well before suddenly come running for dried liver . They are ideal for training and to get the attention of your dog and get control back when you are outside.
Cleaning the oven tray can be a pain after drying liver so cover with tin foil or use disposable foil trays. Dried liver is gorgeous and has a nice smell, I even like eating it but it can make your clothes smell if you carry it in them so use a treat bag when out and about. Just 3 ingredients make this easy liver cake for dogs. Your dogs will love this homemade baked treat. This dog liver cake is low carb and grain free too as we used almond flour.
It may not look the prettiest baked treat but it works as a great training treat and my dogs were circling the kitchen as it was baking like hungry sharks.
Making this was not the most pleasant thing for me, because it's liver but the look in my dog's eyes made it worth it. It would be also be "human friendly" but you would have to be a big fan of liver to snack on a piece of this!
