Recipe: Salmon Dog Food for Skin and Coat Health
If you ask your veterinarian what the best indicator of your dog's overall health and well-being is, he'll likely tell you that it is your pup's skin and coat. Proper nutrition may just be the easiest way to improve your dog's skin and coat health, and this salmon dog food recipe could be a good option. Feeding the right ingredients will balance the skin's pH and stimulate the production of natural oils.
You may not realize how important it is to keep your dog's skin and coat in top health, but think about the major role these body parts play in Fido's everyday life. His skin and coat are essential to regulating body temperature, enhancing sensation from the environment and protecting against germs from the world around him.
If your dog is having serious skin troubles, it's best to seek veterinary help. It can often be difficult to distinguish the cause of a skin or coat problem in dogs, because of the complex interaction between the different layers of their skin and coat system. That being said, some of the most common causes of skin and coat problems in dogs include:
- malnutrition
- naturally dry skin
- naturally oily skin
- failure to properly groom your dogs coat
- bathing too often or not enough
- using products on a dogs skin or coat that are designed for human use
- allergies
- emotional/psychological turmoil
Being aware of these causes makes it easier to look into the source and try to eliminate the issue from there instead of attempting to treat the symptoms on the surface alone. If you think your pup is just suffering from some minor dry skin issues, this salmon dog food recipe may help.

You can store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 5 days. You can also freeze leftovers in an airtight container for 2-3 months. You can make the recipe in bulk and freeze for later use, so you don't have to cook meals for your pet every few days.

CAN DOGS EAT SALMON?
Salmon is a great food for dogs. It's great for a shiny coat with it's high content of omega-3 fatty acids and is a great protein source. Salmon helps with inflammation and can help with skin irritiations.
The salmon must be cooked and ensure that you remove any fish bones before serving it. Boneless salmon fillets are a great option. Raw salmon should not be given to dogs.
The skin can be high in fats so keep it as a special treat.
Remember to go slowly when introducing new foods. And we recommend checking with your veterinarian first if your dog has any digestive issues or other health concerns.

Cooking salmon for dogs is a pretty straightforward process. The most important thing to remember is that salmon has to be cooked to 145 degrees to make salmon safe for dogs to eat, otherwise it can be dangerous for dogs to consume.
That makes thoroughly cooked fresh or frozen salmon great to fix for dogs as well as canned salmon.
Ive got 5 recipes for you that will show you exactly how to cook salmon for dogs!
Cooking Salmon for Dogs
The basic rule of thumb here is that as long as you are using dog safe ingredient (no garlic or onion) and cook the salmon to an internal temperature of 145 degrees, then you cook salmon for dogs mostly like you cook salmon for humans.
Typically, you wont use as many spices, but other than that they methods are quite similar.
TIP: Any time you are making homemade dog food, check the recipe with your vet. Vets will often recommend a nutritional dog supplement (like these from Amazon) to make sure your pup is getting enough vitamins and minerals as well as other nutrients.
Homemade Salmon Dog Food
This dog food recipe features good high quality, fresh ingredients in a well balanced approach.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. salmon WITH skin
- 1 tbsp. coconut oil (you can substitute olive oil or other cooking oil)
- 1 head of broccoli
- 3 sweet potatoes
- 2 carrots
- 1 squash
Directions
First, youll need to cook the salmon in a skillet using the coconut oil to prevent sticking.
Chop the squash, carrots and broccoli, and steam them until they are tender. Boil the sweet potatoes until tender as well. I leave the skin on the potatoes, as there are beneficial nutrients (like fiber and potassium) in the skin. When the potatoes are tender, mash them.
Once all your prep work is done, its time to combine the ingredients to make Salmon and Broccoli Dog Food. Shred the salmon in a large mixing bowl. Now, add the broccoli, squash and carrots. Mix thoroughly.
Finally, addthe sweet potatoesand mix until everything is completely combined. Once the food has cooled, you can feed it to your pet.
The serving size for this recipe is about 1/2 cup per 25 pounds of weight.Keep in mind that it is difficult to recommend serving sizes when it comes to homemade dog food. It is best to consult with your veterinarian to learn about your pets specific nutritional needs.
You can store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 5 days. As I mentioned above, you can also freeze the leftovers in an airtight container for storage of about 2-3 months.

Baked Salmon for Dogs
I make salmon for my dogs the same way I make salmon for myself. I coat it with a little olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake until the center is done.
Remember that for dogs it MUST reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees or it can be dangerous.
The Bottom Line on Cooking Salmon for Dogs
Salmon is good for dogs as long as its cooked to a temperature of at least 145 degrees. You can fix salmon for a dog just like you would for a human, but make sure to omit onions and garlic from recipes for dogs because these ingredients are toxic to dogs.
